Foundations of Music has been serving the children of Chicago since 1987. Originally known as Christmas is for Kids, the Chicago music industry, spearheaded by Kimberly Stiffle (née DuShane) of Jam Productions, rallied together to help support children living in homeless shelters.
Christmas is for Kids soon became Rock for Kids with more and more members of Chicago’s music scene coming together every year to support children living in challenging circumstances. Eventually, the organization changed its focus from helping children in homeless shelters, to providing valuable music education to the school children of Chicago.
The organization changed its name to Foundations of Music in early 2014, to reflect its mission of empowering children through music education. Starting with one group of 20 students, Foundations of Music has grown to serve more than 5,000 students annually, with 10 teaching artists, in more than 30 Chicago Public Schools.
